So here’s the scoop – during the development of the 2018 Renault Megane R.S. Trophy, it was tested around the famous Nürburgring racing circuit and it clinched the lap record (fastest lap) for front-wheel drive production vehicles. This lap record would’ve built the hype around this car and we bet Renault was hoping it would be so.
But unfortunately, before the car was officially launched, the Honda Civic Type R swooped in and took the lap record for FWD production vehicles and got all the glory.
Naturally, we imagine Renault wasn’t too happy about that and they got working on what would later be called the Renault Megane RS Trophy-R. Which is a more extreme version of the more extreme version of the already extreme Megane RS.
Surprisingly there isn’t a power upgrade, the turbocharged 1.8 litre engine still puts out exactly the same power and torque as in the RS Trophy. All there is, is just less weight and a slightly better chassis.
Well then, do you want one? If yes, then don’t get too excited as yet, only a few hundred units will be made, even those will be sold in select markets and that might not include SA.
Watch below as Renault Sport development driver Laurent Hurgon hurl the Trophy-R around the circuit more ominously known as the ‘Green Hell’.
